Over the past five years, my experience as a teacher has exposed the interstices of the education system. My sole purpose in teaching is to affect the lives of all the children that are placed in my path. However, because of the high academic demands and increasing distress from all areas in the lives of children, many need an intervention. This assistance often takes place in the classroom. However, a counselor's role is heightened in the eyes of those children who seem to be slipping away. Simply a smile or words of affirmation can change a child for a lifetime. I know because I experienced this myself many times from my own teachers and counselors. Because of their deeds of kindness, I press on to pursue my calling in affecting the future generations, one child at a time.
