Since 1989, the National Science Foundation has supported the Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program to bring students to undertake individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at either Chesapeake Biological Lab or Horn Point Lab of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. The program includes a 12-week program during the summer, a $4,200 stipend plus housing and travel to and from site, and hands-on research experience.
