The Goldwater Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students, who are known as Barry M. Goldwater Scholars, in the spring of each year for use during the following academic year. The awards are given to those who will be rising college juniors and seniors, and who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, for up to $7,500 annually. This scholarship requires a university nomination and has a campus application deadline in mid-September, which precedes the national application deadline.
