The Abe Fellowship supports post-doctoral research on contemporary policy-relevant issues. It provides up to 12 months of support for study at the post-doctoral level. This grant is for U.S. and Japanese citizens and for other nationals who can demonstrate a long-standing affiliation in the research community of either nation. Applicants must hold a PhD or the terminal degree in their field, or have attained an equivalent level of professional experience. Applications from researchers in professions other than academia are encouraged to apply. Applicants must study abroad, either in the U.S. or Japan, for at least a third of the duration of the grant. Previous language training is not necessary unless the proposed project requires it. The fellowship application deadline is in early September.
