What is
Sigma Tau?

What is the history of Sigma Tau?

Sigma Tau was founded at the University of Nebraska on February 24, 1904 by fourteen faculty members and students in the College of Engineering. Sigma Tau merged with Tau Beta Pi on January 1, 1974.

What are the requirements to be in Sigma Tau?

Membership was chosen from the upper one-third of the Junior and Senior classes at recognized engineering schools. Selection from those men and women are made on the further basis of practicality and sociability. Approval of at least three engineering faculty is required. Distinguished members of the engineering profession may be admitted as alumni members.

To become a member, candidates must meet both the scholastic and exemplary character requirements, be elected by a student chapter, pay a one-time membership fee, and attend an initiation ceremony. After reviewing the scholastic requirements below, contact the leaders at the student chapter on your campus if you believe you are eligible. Each chapter has its own method for determining whether a candidate meets the exemplary character requirements. This often includes attending an interview, completing a quiz, obtaining member signatures, an activity or project, participating in an Engineering Futures session, or even polishing a Bent!

Based on the information, here is our review:

Our first observation is: that Sigma Tau is actually a defunct society, and merged with Tau Beta Pi back in the 1970’s.

Our second observation was: that there is little information on this society as is, but you can find much more information if you search the society they were absorbed into.

Our third observation was: that many of the benefits are more discount-based than anything.
