What are the requirements to be in Pi Kappa Lambda?
- Seniors must be in the upper one-fifth of their class;
- Juniors in the upper one-tenth of their class;
- Graduate students must have grades of A (or the equivalent if letter grades are not used) in two-thirds of their graduate studies.
- Faculty members may be elected to membership in accordance with regulations stated in the National Constitution.
What is the history of Pi Kappa Lambda?
Since the aim of the educational process is the stimulation of the student toward the highest level of achievement within his or her capabilities, outstanding accomplishment should be accorded particular recognition.
In an attempt to provide such recognition, the Alumni Association of the School of Music at Northwestern University in 1916 appointed a committee to consider the feasibility of installing an honor society in the field of music. Serving on the committee were Carl Milton Beecher, Louis Norton Dodge, and Walter Allen Stults. As a result of their labors, Pi Kappa Lambda was granted a charter by the State of Illinois in 1918.

Our first observation is: that this was one of the first musical honor societies to exist, and being a member may set others apart from those in their field.
Our second observation was: that there was not an abundance of information on this society, as it is smaller than most.
Our third observation was: that the Seniors and Juniors have differing levels of GPA requirements, meaning it becomes more scholastically challenging to remain a member as time goes by.
