Finding a Good Read

Oct 28,2015

I have always loved Sophie Kinsella’s books; I started reading the Confessions of a Shopaholic series when I was in eighth grade and I am still reading it.  To this day, I have read every single book Sophie Kinsella has written, except for the new Shopaholic book that is coming out.  I love her books because they are funny, light, and easy to read in a single day.  Each of her characters are lovable and are easy to relate to.  You are easily drawn into her world and can find yourself laughing along with her characters.  Finding Audrey while a very good book, is not the same as Kinsella’s other books.

Finding Audrey surrounds Audrey, a teenager who is trying to overcome a traumatic event in her life.  While Kinsella does not come right out and say what this event was, the reader can assume that it was a situation of school bullying.  This event causes Audrey to break down socially; she has to wear dark sunglasses because she cannot look others directly in the eye without breaking down.  The book details her journey to becoming “normal” again, through the help of a new friend.  Through this journey, she comes out of her shell and talks to strangers while trying to let go of her past.  Because of the sensitive topics and events that occur through the book, this book could bother someone who suffers from social anxiety like Audrey.  Despite this, I recommend everyone to read this book, or at least to give it a chance.  I will give my reasons as to why you should read this book.

1.  It is different.  This book by far is different from other books that Sophie Kinsella has written.  While this book has its funny moments, the book is a little darker than her other books.  Her other books have very simple “shocking” moments that will make you laugh at the end, but this one will make you think twice before laughing.  The character is supposed to be funny, but it is more of a dark humor.

2.  It is enlightening.  This book will give you a look at how someone who has social anxiety gets through their day.  While I cannot speak from experience, I know people who have social anxiety and it can be terrible.  It can make someone feel like they are alone, but they want to be alone (if that makes sense).  This book will hopefully show you that not everyone can easily make friends or go up and talk with strangers.  Audrey is a wonderful and caring character and I hope that you see that.

I hope that this article has made you want to pick up Finding Audrey.  This is by far one of my favorite books and I hope that it will quickly become one of your favorites!  Leave me a comment if you have read this book and if you liked it or not.
